The Netherlands is still lagging far behind UN renewable energy targets

The Netherlands is making progress towards achieving 17 key United Nations targets by 2030 but still lags behind in climate protection, renewable energy and economic and social inequality, the national statistics office CBS said on Wednesday.

The aim of the goals, agreed as global policy themes in September 2015, is to create more prosperity, boost equality, combat climate change and stimulate peace and justice.

The Netherlands is performing well in terms of economic sustainability, education, health and the rule of law, while the risk of poverty is relatively low from an international perspective.

But in terms of renewable energy and greenhouse gas emissions per head of the population, the Netherlands is at the bottom of the EU list.

‘The Netherlands remains the dirtiest kid in the class,’ CBS chief economist Peter Hein van Mulligen told RTLZ. ‘It has been this way for a long time. We were at the bottom for renewables last year as well and our neighbouring countries are doing far better than we are.’

The Netherlands is also top of the list when it comes to having a productive system of agriculture, but very low when it comes to organic farming.
