Zandvoort’s local council is erecting a 700 metre-long fence on the south side of the seaside town to keep out deer who have been ravaging gardens and causing traffic accidents.

The decision follows the decision to begin culling the animals in 2016, which has barely reduced numbers so far.

Other deterrent measures tried by the council in recent years include scented pillars, lasers and dog patrols, but none of them prevented the deer from sneaking into the town. The deer are blamed for eating from gardens and causing accidents by running out in front of cars.

The idea to put up a fence was the outcome of a meeting between local residents, the council and water board Waternet.

‘The residents wanted a traditional 500 metre fence, but we agreed that a longer fence with a bend in it is better. It makes it harder for them to work out how they can get into the village,’ said council spokeswoman Anya Terpstra.

‘They’ve become part of the village, but we don’t want them to become street kids or bucks. We hope they’ll stay in their natural habitat.’
