The damage to homes, cars and other private property during the New Year festivities this year totals €10m to €12m, the Dutch insurers organisation VvV said on Tuesday.

The initial assessment is well down on the €15m in claims generated by the 2016/17 celebrations, the VvV said. Nevertheless, the number of car fires – some 200 in total – is a cause for concern, the insurers said.

The figures do not include the cost of medical treatment or damage to company property and schools. There were at least two fires in company property during the festivities and one school was seriously damaged, news agency ANP said.
