The number of mobile speed traps spotted waiting to catch motorists alongside Dutch roads went up almost 40% in the first five months of this year, the AD said on Wednesday.

In total, motorists reported almost 8,000 speed traps to the Flitsmeister traffic app, which warns drivers when they are approaching one.

Police spokesman Egbert-Jan van Hasselt told the paper that he expected the number of mobile controls to increase this year, after a reduction in 2016 due to software issues and the police strike.

In total, 640,000 fines have been issued to drivers caught going too fast by speed traps so far this year.
