Firefighter physical test ‘discriminates against women’, claims VBVA

No smoke without fire? Claims firefighter test is discriminatory

A new firefighters’ health test discriminates against women, according to one firefighter who has taken her case to the Dutch human rights body.

NOS broadcaster reports on Friday that 53-year-old Jorien Traas, who just failed the test, believes it is discriminatory because it does not account for physical differences between men and women.

The firefighters’ volunteer association, the VBV, is reportedly afraid that the number of female volunteers will fall as a number of women have failed the test. It has been campaigning for the test to take account of differences between people.

But the Dutch fire service told NOS that it was satisfied with the physical exam and that men and women have to do the same jobs, although it said that it wanted to address a decline in volunteers.
