The Netherlands is the world’s fifth-largest market for electric cars after China, the US, Japan and Norway, the Financieele Dagblad reported on Thursday.

The market, so far, is minisclule, but growing by leaps and bounds. Only 114,050 electric cars were registered in the Netherlands by April of this year, but they accounted for 6.4% of total new car sales in 2016, the paper said.

Under the government’s Green Deal  programme worked out with car sector organisations, half of new car sales in 2025 should be electric or hybrid, the paper said. In Norway, such cars already account for 33% of sales.

Electric cars account for only 0.2% of the global total, but sales are picking up quickly according to the International Energy Agency. The IEA said the market grew by 60% to two million in 2016 after being almost non-existent five years ago, Bloomberg added.
