Dutch AI program turns doodles into strange ‘photos’
An artificial intelligence programme that generates photographic images from 2D drawings has proven so popular that the NPO broadcasting system has had to turn on extra servers, reports NOS.
The website, fotogenerator.npocloud.nl, has been online since May 30 and has provoked a flurry of attention in the international media.
It has been developed for radio programme Nieuws en Co, and uses 200 images of presenter Lara Rense as the basis for making ‘photographic’ images of sketches that people feed in.
Between 5 and 7 June it was generating 250,000 images a day.
The Pix2Pix algorithm was developed by Tom Kenter of the University of Amsterdam and thought up by science editor Gerda Bosman. ‘We wanted to show the artistic capabilities of artificial intelligence,’ said Bosman.
But, comments Business Insider: “Sometimes [the images] are impressively realistic. Much more often, they’re totally disturbing.’
