‘Suspicious’ kids treasure hunt parcel closes A2 motorway
A mysterious package which led to the A2 being closed for around an hour on Wednesday appears to be part of the entertainment for a children’s party.
The package was spotted in grass under a viaduct taking the A2 over the IJssel and a local road near Nieuwegein by road workers on Wednesday morning. They called the police who brought in explosives experts to check the parcel out.
An ambulance worker at the scene told the AD there was a sticker on the package which read ‘please leave for children’s party’. The police said in a statement that the ‘object was probably left there as part of a treasure hunt.’
The A2 was closed between Oudenrijn and Vianen in both directions while the package was investigated. Shipping along the IJssel river was also stopped.
The road closure led to diversions and long delays.
