Six teams of scientists have been awarded a total of €112.8 million to carry out research into a range of disciplines from quantum computers to ancient Greek and Roman history.

Each team will receive the same amount of just under €19 million to support their work for 10 years. It is the largest grant for scientific research in the Netherlands for nearly four years.

In previous years only exact sciences have been eligible for such awards, but the criteria have been broadened this time to include a wider range of subjects and to fund female scientists. Four of the six lead researchers are women.

Education minister Jet Bussemaker said funding independent research was a priority for the government. ‘By doing this we are encouraging free and independent research, driven by curiosity, which is very important in enabling us to achieve a breakthrough.’
