Amsterdam Airbnb fines mount up, top €500,000
Amsterdam officials have levied fines of €526,500 on home owners who are illegally renting out their properties on holiday rental sites like Airbnb since last autumn, the Telegraaf said on Friday.
Earlier this week, the city fined facility company Keyokay plus property owners a total of €175,000 for breaking the rules on Airbnb rentals. The city bans holiday rentals for more than 60 days a year and to more than four people.
Keyokay, which provides cleaning and welcome services for home owners, has now gone bust, owner Douwe Wielenga told the paper. It was fined €13,500 for each of the five apartments which were closed down by city officials.
The owners of the properties, in the canal area and in Zuid, were fined €108,000.
‘We are getting better and better at tackling illegal hotels and key companies,’ city alderman Laurens Ivens told the paper. ‘We are getting tough because we need to make clear that homes are meant to be lived in.’
