A win, a draw and a loss for Dutch clubs in Europe
There were mixed fortunes for the three Dutch clubs taking part in the Europa League championships on Thursday night.
Amsterdam’s Ajax managed no more than a 2-2 draw against Spanish side Celta in their Group G dual but remain one point clear at the top with seven points from three games.
Rotterdam’s Feyenoord moved to the top in Group A after a 1-0 win over Ukrainian team Zorya and also now seem more likely to move into the knock-out rounds after the winter break.
‘We did not play to Zorya’s strengths and created a lot of opportunities ourselves,’ Feyenoord manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst said. ‘It’s a good win. Winning at home is the minimum we have to do. We are almost there.’
AZ of Alkmaar, however, lost 1-2 to Maccabi Tel Aviv and languish at the bottom of Group D with just one point from three games.
