15-year-old Maastricht girl found guilty of planning to join IS
A 15-year-old girl from Maastricht has been sentenced to eight months in juvenile detention for planning to go to Syria to join terrorist organisation IS. Of that eight months, seven months and 14 days were made conditional on her not reoffending, judges said on Tuesday.
The girl will also remain under electronic supervision for two years, has been banned from going to a Dutch airport for the same period and has to have talks with a theologian. The aim, said judges, is to prevent her from radicalising again.
The public prosecution based its case on online chats in which the girl texted with other ‘sisters’ about leaving for the caliphate and about how to get to Syria via Düsseldorf airport. She also spoke about selling a ring to finance her trip.
However, the court dismissed the prosecutor’s claim that she had a visa for Sudan, saying there was no evidence she actually had one.
The maximum sentence the court could have imposed is one year in juvenile detention.
