A 28-year-old police officer in The Hague has been arrested for leaking information about possible marijuana plantation locations and helping to steal drugs, the public prosecution department confirmed on Thursday.

The police officer, named by the Telegraaf as Amin A, is also suspected of corruption, burglary and being a member of a criminal organisation, the department said in a statement. He was arrested on June 1 and has been remanded in custody for 60 days while the investigation continues.

Three other people have been arrested in connection with the case, one of whom is said to be the receiver of the confidential information. The other two were picked up on burglary charges.

The police officer is said to have accessed confidential police documents about possible locations for marijuana plantations and tipped off his 27-year-old co-suspect. The other three men would then break in and steal the drugs before the police arrived to check out the situation.

He is due to appear in court again on September 9.

According to the Telegraaf, A had been reprimanded for his close ties to known criminals in Gouda during his training period but had, nevertheless, been cleared to join the force.

Last year, another police officer, named as Mark M, was arrested on charges of leaking information about more than 100 criminal investigations to gang members.
