Martina wins 100m gold for the Netherlands at European championships
Dutchman Churandy Martina took the gold medal in the men’s 100m sprint at the European athletics championships in Amsterdam on Thursday.
Martina, 32, was trailing well into the race but took the title after speeding up toward the finish, beating Turkey’s Jak Ali Harvey into second place. Both noted a time of 10.07. France’s Jimmy Vicaut took bronze in 10.08.
Solomon Bockarie, the second Dutchman in the final, was in seventh and last place, following the disqualification of Britain’s Richard Kilty after a false start.
Martina was not favourite for the event, but will be in action on Friday in the 200m, which is considered to be his better distance.
Long jump
The first Dutch medal of the tournament went to Ignisious Gaisah, who took bronze in the long jump with a distance of 7.93 metres.
Nevertheless, Gaisah has not qualified for the Olympics in Rio next month, for which he required a jump of 8.15 metres. Gold went to Britain’s Greg Rutherford with 8.25 metres.
On Friday, Dutch gold medal hopeful Dafne Schippers is favourite to take the women’s 100m title.
