The 18-year-old Dutch boy who was found dead under a bridge in Belgium in 2010 may not have committed suicide after all, forensic experts say in Monday’s AD.

The body of Lesley Timmer was exhumed earlier this year after his family called for a new investigation. The high school pupil vanished in June 2010 after buying a return train ticket to Eindhoven.

His body was found three days later under a bridge in the Belgian city of Liege. He had serious injuries and his hands were tied behind his back using his shoelaces. His feet were also tied. The death was described as suicide by the Belgian authorities.

The new investigation focused on Lesley Timmer’s broken bones, to assess if they correspond to the injuries that would result from falling from a bridge or being thrown from a car.

Independent forensic pathologist Frank van de Goot said there are ‘enough reasons to assume that the scenario of suicide caused by a fall from a great height needs revision’.

‘The research has delivered sufficient new findings to merit a new criminal investigation,’ lawyer Sebas Diekstra told the AD.
