Queen Máxima causes a stir in Germany with ‘swastika’ coat
Queen Máxima caused a stir on the second day of the royal visit to Bavaria in Germany by wearing a grey coat embroidered with what some commentators said were swastikas.
German news organisations TZ, Bild and N24 all commented on her outfit, describing it as ‘notable’ and a ‘swastika coat’.
The coat was designed by Danish designer Claes Iversen and was worn by Máxima, 44, on a visit to Denmark a year ago without creating a stir. Iversen himself lives in the Netherlands.
Iversen said in a statement that it had never been his aim to make such a connection. ‘The embroidery was created with the idea of being unconventional but in a classical geometric form,’ he said.
The design was built up out of the shapes of building material such as screws and keys, he said.
Some people had commented that the arms of the ‘swastika’ resembled an Ikea screw key.
