New ‘Rembrandt’ unveiled in Amsterdam, printed in 3D
A new portrait ‘by’ Rembrandt was unveiled in Amsterdam on Tuesday, created by a group of art historians and tech wizards using 3D printing techniques.
The Next Rembrandt was built up using information from all 346 known paintings by the Dutch master and based on algorithms and facial recognition techniques. The work, which has 148 million pixels, was built up out of nearly 170,000 separate parts of Rembrandt’s work.
It has taken the team 18 months to create the new Rembrandt, but art lovers are not entirely convinced, broadcaster Nos said. ‘I would expect more accent on the collar and the painting to be sharper,’ said one.
Nevertheless, art historian Gary Schwartz told the Guardian the project is ‘a fascinating exercise in connoisseurship’.
The idea was developed by the advertising agency J Walter Thompson for ING.
