The Dutch used 112 billion megabytes of mobile data last year, almost double the 2014 total, according to the consumers authority ACM.

The huge rise is due to the wider availability of 4G networks, the ACM said. In addition, mobile phone firms are increasing the size of the data bundles in their subscription packages.

Over the past four years, telecom companies have pumped €4bn into developing their 4G networks but use of the 3G network is still higher, the ACM said.

Two-thirds of Dutch households have an internet connection with a speed of at least 30 Mb per second.
