Cancer is responsible for 31% of Dutch deaths
The death rate from cancer in the Netherlands is the second highest in Europe, according to European statistics agency Eurostat. In total, 31% of deaths in the Netherlands are due to cancer, compared with 26% in the EU as a whole.
When it comes to the under-65s, the Dutch death rate from cancer is highest in all 28 EU countries, the report shows. In total, 47% of Dutch people who die before the age of 65 had cancer. The EU average is 37%.
Only in Slovenia do more people die from cancer, while Romania, Lithuania and Bulgaria have the lowest cancer death rates in the EU. The figures date from 2013 for most countries but the Dutch statistics are from 2012.
Lung cancer is the most common form of cancer in the Netherlands, accounting for 27% of all cases. Colorectal cancer accounts for 12% of cancer deaths, followed by breast cancer (7%).
