A 400 year old building in the centre of Den Bosch collapsed at the weekend in the middle of renovation work. ‘The only thing left on the wall are the work rosters for next week,’ Nos reporter Trudy van Rijswijk said.

The property, on the city’s main market square, is located next to the building where painter Hieronymous Bosch worked at the start of his career. Den Bosch is currently celebrating 500 years since the painter died.

The front of the building, which dates from 1637, can be seen on security camera footage collapsing into the street. No-one was injured. It is unclear what caused the building to collapse and the renovation work focused on the interior, not the main structure, broadcaster Nos said.

The building, used by the opticians’ chain Pearle, was to have had a central role in a special light show celebrating the life of Bosch next weekend.
