Information about some 200,000 Dutch nationals, including almost 125,000 children, has been exposed to hackers during a cyber attack on digital toymaker VTech, the company said on Wednesday.

In total, the details of 6.4 million children worldwide were stolen during the hack on the company’s Learning Lodge app store and Kid Connect messaging system.

The information includes the name, sex and date of birth but according to website Motherboard, the hacker was also able to access chats and photographs which were stored on the company servers.

Most of the information was stolen about people in the US, followed by France and Britain.

Technology news site Motherboard, which broke the news of the breach last week, said the person who claimed responsibility for the hack said he did not plan to sell or publish the data.

‘Frankly, it makes me sick that I was able to get all this stuff,’ the hacker told Motherboard in an encrypted chat. ‘VTech should have the book thrown at them.’
