Eredivisie weekend round-up: Honours even in ‘De Klassieke’

eredivisie logo footballFeyenoord and Ajax share the spoils, PSV survive Utrecht scare, while AZ Alkmaar win away in Arnhem, writes Neil Adderley.

Roda JC 1 1 ADO Den Haag: 10 man Roda hold ADO

Roda JC faced ADO seeking to make good a 60 drubbing by Ajax, and the hosts were in front after 11 minutes through Tom van Hyfte.

However, in form ADO striker Mike Havenaar levelled matters before the break with his eighth goal of the season.

And when Tomi Juric was shown a second half red card, it seemed ADO were set to pile more misery on Darije Kalezic’s Roda.

But despite the oneman advantage ADO failed to break down the home side, leaving both teams having to settle for a point.

FC Twente 1 4 Heerenveen: Twente struggle continues

A desperately poor start to the season for Twente shows no signs of abating as Heerenveen claimed an easy victory in Enschede.

The Frisians went ahead on six minutes when Caner Cavlan struck a post and Luciano Narsingh converted the rebound.

Twente should have equalised six minutes later, but the usually reliable Hakim Ziyech screwed the ball wide from the penalty spot.

Heerenveen doubled the lead on 40 minutes after young keeper Joel Drommel failed to deal with a high ball into the box, to leave Kenny Otigba a simple tap in.

Twente captain Ziyech made amends for his penalty miss with a superb long range effort, but the hosts joy was short lived.

Firstly, defender Joachim Andersen put through his own net, before Sam Larsson sealed a comfortable victory for the visitors with a powerful late strike.

NEC 2 0 De Graafschap: NEC take Gelderse derby spoils

A goal in each half from club top scorer Christian Santos was enough to secure victory for NEC over rock bottom De Graafschap.

De Graafschap, without a win in their opening eleven Eredivisie fixtures, came closest to breaking the deadlock, but Cas Peters watched his effort drop wide of the NEC goal.

As the game settled, the hosts began to take control and Santos made no mistake from 12 yards after Alexander Bannink had handled in the box.

NEC keeper Benjamin Kirsten denied Bannink some redemption with an excellent second half save, before Santos finished off a sweeping counter attack to secure the derby victory.

De Graafschap remain firmly rooted to the foot of the table, while NEC remain in an excellent sixth place.

Willem II 2 3 Excelsior: Relegation battle looms for Willem II

Excelsior boss Fons Groenendijk, sacked by Willem II in 2011, returned to Tilburg to pile the pressure on his former club.

Richairo Zivkovic got the hosts off to a flying start, combining with fellow Ajax loanee Lucas Andersen, before finishing smartly after just 41 seconds.

Excelsior responded only two minutes later as Tom van Weert equalised from close range.

Willem II restored the lead through Dries Wuytens, before the defender was punished for holding in the box to allow Jeff Stans to restore parity for the visitors.

And when Wuytens allowed the ball to slip under his foot on the hour mark, Daryl van Mieghem was left with a clear run on goal to hand Groenendijk and Excelsior the three points.

PEC Zwolle 1 1 Heracles: Last minute Nijland denies in form visitors

Heracles were seconds away from another excellent victory, but Stef Nijland struck from 20 yards to deny the Eredivisie’s surprise package.

The away side’s excellent early season form seemed set to continue as striker Wout Weghorst tapped home after an awful Thomas Lam mistake on 18 minutes.

Heracles looked comfortable throughout, and were all set to take three points back on the short journey to Almelo.

However, with the game well into its 95th minute, PEC forward Stef Nijland beat Heracles keeper Bram Castro to steal a point for Ron Jans’ men.

Feyenoord 1 1 Ajax: All square in ‘De Klassieker’

A deflected Davy Klaassen shot allowed Ajax to come from behind in a tight game at De Kuip.

Feyenoord, much the better team in the first half, grabbed a deserved lead when Dirk Kuijt found Sven van Beek who finished low past Jasper Cillessen.

Van Beek, who last week had scored an horrendous own goal, then denied Riechedly Bazoer with a last ditch block on the stroke of half time.

The second period saw a much improved Ajax, and the visitors levelled proceedings, albeit with a huge stroke of fortune.

Ajax captain Davy Klaassen hitting a 58th minute angled drive that was wickedly deflected up and over the despairing Kenneth Vermeer in the Feyenoord goal.

The visitors remained in control, however the best chance of the second half fell to Colin KazimRichards.

The Feyenoord substitute, put through on goal by Eljero Elia, miss hit an effort that was easily dealt with by Ajax keeper Cillessen.

PSV 3 1 Utrecht: Champions squeeze past impressive Utrecht

Goals from Hector Moreno, Santiago Arias and Luuk de Jong were eventually enough for PSV to see off Utrecht.

The reigning champions took an early lead when a Andres Guardado cross was buried by Moreno. The hosts failed to take advantage of their early domination as Robbin Ruiter denied both Jurgen Locadia and Luuk de Jong.

Utrecht gained a foothold in the game and should have been level as both Sebastien Haller and Nacer Barazite wasted good chances.

Utrecht continued to worry the PSV defence and were level within 4 minutes of the second half, promising midfielder Bart Ramselaar finally beating PSV keeper Jeroen Zoet, after a Nacer Barazite effort had come back of the post.

The away team, sensing a famous victory at the Philips Stadium, were inches away from taking the lead as Haller beat Zoet, only for his effort to scrape the wrong side of the far post.

Phillip Cocu introduced Gaston Pereiro and Jorrit Hendrix to proceedings, and the substitutions paid dividends for the PSV boss.

Pereiro made an immediate impact as he played in Arias who made no mistake from the inside the box.

PSV were then awarded a penalty but Luuk de Jong failed to convert from the spot. However, the captain made up for the miss by firing home a Jurgen Locadia cross on 72 minutes.

The win for PSV moves them within two points of league leaders Ajax.

Cambuur 2 2 Groningen: Drost stunner denies first win for Cambuur

Groningen, who had been dumped out of Europa League contention by Liberec on Thursday, got off to a woeful start as Cambuur raced into a two goal lead within the opening 15 minutes.

Martijn Barto claimed the opener on nine minutes, and the striker grabbed a second on 13 minutes, after more sloppy defending from the visiting back four.

Cambuur, without a win in the opening eleven games, were pegged back in the second half as Johan Kappelhof headed home on 52 minutes.

And the tie was level just six minutes later when Jesper Drost controlled smartly, before hitting a stunning 25 yard left foot drive into the top corner.

Groningen goalkeeper Sergio Padt almost won it for the visitors when his huge clearance narrowly missed the target, after bouncing on the artificial turf and over fellow keeper Leonard Nienhuis.

Vitesse 0 2 AZ Alkmaar: Vitesse not so Marvelous as AZ ease past 10 man hosts

AZ boss John van den Brom is about to extend his contract in Alkmaar, and the former Vitesse player and manager, will put pen to paper this week on the back of a deserved away win.

The visitors were in control throughout the 90 minutes against a below par Vitesse.

And AZ were given a further boost on the stroke of halftime, as Vitesse midfielder Marvelous Nakamba was shown a second yellow for a late challenge on Derrick Luckassen.

The numerical advantage eventually paid off when Vincent Janssen beat Eloy Room on 76 minutes, after good work from the impressive Markus Henriksen.

And it was man of the match Henriksen who popped up just two minutes later to seal an excellent AZ Alkmaar away victory.
