Autumn storms expected on Friday afternoon

People with umbrellas in wind and rainWinds of up to 90 kph are expected to hit coastal parts of the Netherlands on Friday afternoon as autumn storms cross the country, the KNMI weather bureau says.

The organisation has issued a code yellow weather warning for the entire country and says the strong winds will be accompanied by hail, thunder and lightning and heavy showers.

The traffic information service VID says the storm is likely to coincide with the evening rush hour and is warning motorists to be extra careful on the roads.

The wind will die down overnight although the rain will continue over the weekend, the KNMI says. Nevertheless, it will still be warm for the time of year, with the temperature reaching up to 15 degrees on Sunday.

The unseasonably high temperatures this November have led outdoor ice rinks all over the country to close because it is too warm to keep the ice in good condition.
