Ajax keep European hopes alive, AZ is out
Amsterdam football club Ajax kept their hopes of remaining in this year’s Europa League competition alive on Thursday night with a crucial 2-1 away win over Glasgow Celtic.
However, to qualify for the knock-out rounds Ajax need to beat Swedish team Molde in their last match and bottom of the group Celtic have to beat Fenerbahçe in Turkey.
Ajax’s winning goal was scored by 18-year-old substitute Václav Černy who came off the bench to hit home the winner two minutes from time.
There was disappointment on Thursday night for AZ of Alkmaar, who lost 1-2 at home to Partizan Belgrado and are now out of the competition.
