Defending champion Epke Zonderland fails to make high bar final
Dutch gymnast Epke Zonderland has not made it to the final of the world high bar championships in Glasgow to defend his title. This means Zonderland will not qualify automatically for the event at the Olympic Games in Rio next year, broadcaster Nos reports.
Zonderland, who is also Olympic champion, has been hit by a thumb injury and concussion following a fall, severely reducing training times for the Glasgow event. He came 31st on the high bar on Monday.
‘I missed the feeling of the quick changes,’ Zonderland said after the event. ‘I was short on strength.’
Meanwhile Yuri van Gelder has made it to the men’s final on the rings and will qualify for Rio if he wins a medal. Earlier in the event, the Dutch women’s team also qualified for Rio.
