A record 8,400 refugees came to the Netherlands in September
A record 8,400 asylum seekers and their families came to the Netherlands in September, of whom 62% were from Syria, the national statistics office CBS said on Wednesday.
The previous record dates to May 1999, when 5,200 people claimed asylum in the Netherlands. They were mainly from the former Yugoslavia, which had been torn apart by civil war.
The figure of 8,400, which is 20% up on August, also includes people who were joining family members already here.
September’s total brings the number of registered refugees this year to 23,500, plus 10,000 family members. Of the total, 16,600 come from Syria, the CBS said.
The government said earlier this month it expects the full year total to be up to 60,000.
