There will be no recall of parliament to discuss security following the attack on a high-speed train on Friday.

Anti-Islam PVV party leader Geert Wilders said on Sunday that parliament should be recalled and the terrorism debate scheduled for early September should be brought forward.

He wants the government to do more to secure train stations, airports and shopping centres, the Telegraaf reports.

Sham safety

However, the coalition parties Labour and VVD see no need to recall parliament. According to Labour MP Jeroen Recourt, extra security for stations and other busy places would be a form of sham safety. ‘You cannot secure everything,’ he said.

‘We are only as strong as the weakest link,’ he told the Telegraaf. ‘In this case, we were completely dependent on France. They had an eye on the suspect, but not enough.’

Gunman

The attack took place on Friday evening on a Thalys high-speed train travelling from Amsterdam to Paris. The gunman was overpowered by three US citizens, two of them off-duty soldiers. A British passenger helped tie up the gunman.

Two people were injured in the attack.

The 25-year-old Moroccan suspect, Ayoub El-Khazzani, is being questioned by French counter-terrorism police.

The three Americans and the Briton have been awarded France’s highest honour – the Légion d’honneur – for their roles in stopping the attack.
