Greek police have freed a four-year-old Dutch girl from a religious cult, over a week after she was taken from her foster parents and to the island of Patmos by her mother, broadcaster Nos says on Wednesday.

The foster family sounded the alarm after the girl’s biological mother failed to return the child after a visit in late July. The girl was officially listed as missing and placed on an international register.

Social workers were alerted to her whereabouts on July 31 when they spotted photographs of the girl with her biological father on Facebook. Greek police were brought in and removed the girl from the cult.

The girl’s father is a member of the River of Glory cult, which was based in Winterswijk in the Netherlands and has since moved to the Greek island, Nos says.

The River of Glory cult is an apocryphal cult which believes in exorcism and refuses to pay tax because ‘the holy spirit’ did not ask them to.
