Dutch win dressage gold at Euro Championships
The Dutch dressage team was the surprise winner of the European Championships in Aachen on Thursday.
The home side and current world champions, Germany, were expected to take the gold, with Great Britain taking silver and the Netherlands in third place with bronze.
In the event, it was Dutch rider Edward Gal who tipped the scales in his team’s favour, scoring just over 82% on Undercover.
Gal helped the Netherlands win the team gold and took the individual gold at the World Championships in 2010 riding Totilas. The horse became a super star of dressage and was the subject of a controversial sale to Germany.
In Aachen, the stallion was ridden by Germany’s Matthias Alexander Rath who scored just over 75%.
It is only the third time the Netherlands have won gold at the event.
