Dutch tax office wants to know if Airbnb landlords are paying tax

June 12, 2015

airbnb amsterdamThe Dutch tax office has begun an investigation to establish the size of holiday rental website Airbnb in the Netherlands.

The Financieele Dagblad says officials believe they are missing out on millions of euros because the rental income is not being included in annual tax returns.

People who rent out property via Airbnb are supposed to pay tax over 70% of their earnings as ‘income from temporary rentals’.

A spokesman for Airbnb said the company had no objections in principal to cooperating with the tax office but that it would not hand over details about individual landlords on a voluntary basis.

Airbnb did earlier agree to collect tourist tax on behalf of Amsterdam city council but does not release any figures and the council has to assume the information is correct.

The company has said it expects to hand over several million euros to the council in tourist tax, which would indicate turnover of at least €40m, the newspaper says.

The paper says the average price of an Airbnb night in the Netherlands is €120 and that there are 12,000 Dutch addresses online.
