Drunken hedgehog sleeps off hangover, makes full recovery
A drunken hedgehog, found at the weekend unconscious in a pool of the popular Dutch drink advocaat, has made a full recovery, according to the animal shelter where it is being looked after.
The hedgehog was found flat out on Sunday in Arnhem having gorged itself on a broken bottle of the egg, sugar and brandy-based drink.
After sleeping off its excesses, the animal is now eating again, Toon Lesterade of Noach animal shelter in Halle told news agency ANP. ‘After all, if you’ve been drinking too much beer, you are not exactly hungry the next day,’ he said.
The animal, thought to be about two years old, is now curling and uncurling again. If all goes well, the hedgehog will be released back into the wild at the end of the week.
The shelter deals with between 200 and 300 injured hedgehogs a year, ANP reported. Most have been hit by a car or mower or become entangled with strawberry netting or fishing line.
