Eredivisie weekend round up: NAC and Go Ahead consigned to play-offs

eredivisie premier league footballNAC Breda and Go Ahead Eagles were condemned to the dreaded relegation play-offs in the penultimate round of Eredivisie games. Meanwhile at the other end of the table, Manchester United-bound Memphis Depay signed off with a trademark free-kick, writes Neil Adderley.

AZ Alkmaar 3 – 2 NAC Breda: NAC fail to hold on and face relegation play-offs

After Steven Berghuis had given the hosts the advantage, Jeffrey Sarpong and Adnane Tighadouini turned the game to hand NAC a 2-1 lead at the break. However, Robert Maaskant’s strugglers failed to hold on.

Goals in the last 10 minutes from substitute Robert Muhren and Aron Johannsson sealed the victory for third place chasing AZ, and consigned NAC to a fight for Eredivisie survival in the relegation play-offs.

Ajax 3 – 0 Cambuur Leeuwarden: Ajax sign off in Amsterdam with comfortable win

Two second half Viktor Fischer goals and a Lasse Schone free kick gave Ajax victory in their final game of the season at the Amsterdam Arena.

A disappointing first period, in which Frank de Boer’s outgoing champions once again failed to dominate, saw Cambuur in control, although the visitors failed to trouble the Ajax backline.

However, a much improved second half display was enough for the hosts, as a Fischer brace and a powerful Schone free kick wrapped up the win for Ajax.

FC Twente 3 – 0 FC Dordrecht: Troubled Twente sweep aside relegated Dordrecht

Both sides were playing for no more than pride but it was money troubled Twente who gave their supporters some much needed cheer.

While two strikes from Jesus Corona, and a rare goal from captain Andreas Bjelland secured the points, it was Twente’s talented midfielder Hakim Ziyech, bound to be a transfer target this summer, who deservedly took the man-of-the-match award.

FC Utrecht 2 – 2 Excelsior: Away point secures Eredivisie football for Excelsior

A fighting display and deserved point was enough to reward Excelsior with a guarantee of Eredivisie football next season.

Utrecht striker Sebastian Haller gave the hosts the lead from the penalty spot before Excelsior, with late goals from Tom van Weert and Robbin Ruiter turned the game on its head.

Danny Verbeek levelled for Utrecht on 84 minutes, however, Excelsior dug in to hold on to the most crucial of points.

The visitors began the day just two points clear of the relegation zone but, with results elsewhere going the Rotterdammers way, a point was enough to secure Excelsior another term of top flight Dutch football.

Go Ahead Eagles 1 – 1 Heerenveen: Go Ahead face play-off fight for survival

Go Ahead came into the game needing a win and other results to go their way, but the Deventer club failed to overcome Heerenveen and are now consigned to the relegation play-offs.

The hosts began brightly and Jop van der Linden was unfortunate to see his powerful free kick come back off the underside of the bar.

Heerenveen eventually found a way into the game, and into a lead, when Lerin Duarte headed home from close range after good work from striker Henk Veerman.

Go Ahead drew level on 90 minutes through Wesley Verhoek, but it was too little too late for the Eagles who will now prepare for the dreaded Eredivisie relegation play-offs.

Groningen 0 – 1 PEC Zwolle: Defeat for Groningen can’t take the shine off cup final triumph

PEC Zwolle gained some revenge for last Sunday’s cup final heartbreak but it was no more than scant consolation for Ron Jans’ men.

With Groningen’s win over PEC in De Kuip securing the club a berth in the group stages of the Europa League, the home side will not have felt too aggrieved as Tomas Necid claimed the win for PEC with a close range finish.

Necid’s goal was enough for all three points and in turn secured a Europa League play-off place for the visitors.

PSV Eindhoven 2 – 0 Heracles Almelo: Depay signs off in style

Memphis Depay said farewell to PSV supporters but not before firing in another trademark free kick in his final game at the Philips Stadion.

The Manchester United bound forward gave PSV the lead with a 25 yard dead ball, his seventh free kick to find the net this term, to bring his total to 22 goals for the season.

PSV finally doubled the lead when Jetro Willems’ strike was deflected past Bram Castro in the Heracles goal.

All eyes though were firmly fixed on the departing Memphis Depay, as the Eredivisie top scorer and player of the year received a standing ovation from the adoring PSV supporters.

Willem II 1 – 0 ADO Den Haag: Top ten finish in sight for impressive Willem II

A Samuel Armenteros goal leaves Willem II needing just a solitary point to secure an impressive top ten finish on the club’s Eredivisie return.

A bitty, often bad tempered game eventually sprung to life in the second half as ADO’s Michiel Kramer forced a smart stop from Willem II keeper Kostas Lamprou.

The Tilburgers responded almost immediately and, after playing a slick one-two, Samuel Armenteros broke the deadlock with his first goal since February and his tenth of the season.

ADO pushed for an equaliser but Willem II held firm to all but secure a top half Eredivisie finish.
