15 Germans in custody after fight in Zeeland seaside town

Renesse_Church_Tower_View_3Fifteen German nationals remain in custody on Monday evening following Saturday night’s fight in the Dutch seaside resort of Renesse in Zeeland.

Police picked up at least 75 people after the fight broke out when police arrested one of the Germans, RTL news reported. Eyewitnesses said the German had attacked one of the police officers.

The arrest inflamed the situation and the police were then attacked by the rest of the group, RTL news said. The Germans were part of a large group celebrating a stag night.

The group were taken by bus to Breda on Sunday morning and most of them were sent home.

Renesse, which has a winter population of just 1,400, is very popular with young people in the summer months, who flock to its ‘eight or nine’ bars and dance halls, all concentrated in a tiny area.

In 2010, the village announced plans to try to spruce up its image in an effort to encourage a different sort of tourist.
