More sports club want a declaration of good conduct from volunteers
A growing number of sports clubs are asking their volunteers for a certificate of good conduct, according to Trouw on Thursday.
Dutch sports clubs have several hundred thousand volunteers yet only some 10,000 VOGs are requested every year. However, since the beginning of 2015, 519 sports clubs have asked for 10,000 certificates, Geert Snel of Dutch sports federation NOS*NSF told the paper.
One reason is that since January 1 the certificates – known as a VOG – have been free for sports club volunteers, Snel said.
Another reason is the media attention given to high-profile paedophilia cases, according to Marian van der Klein of the Verwey-Jonker institute. She quotes the most recent scandal which involved a hockey coach who was able to film hundreds of young girls in the changing rooms for several years, despite having a conviction for exposing himself.
