Dutch football body opposes winter World Cup, calls for Qatar rethink
The Dutch football association KNVB believes the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar should be reconsidered now a Fifa committee has recommended shifting the event to November and December.
In a statement, the KNVB said it had already made its opposition to a winter World Cup plain.
Furthermore, as the Qatar bid is based on a summer World Cup ‘the KNVB believes that such as change in the basic conditions requires a reconsideration of the decision to give Qatar the contract’.
The KNVB is now looking at the likely impact the recommendation to move the World Cup to the winter will have on the Dutch national competition and on European competitions.
Tuesday’s recommendation is expected to be ratified by Fifa’s executive committee in Zurich on March 19 and 20.
A move will have considerable impact on the Dutch Eredivisie, which tends to break for the winter in mid December.
