Strong winds blow over lorries, and there is more to come

BOOM OP VRACHTWAGEN EN SUPERMARKT STORM PEKELAThe strong winds gusting over the Netherlands on Friday have caused road accidents and blown down trees, news agency ANP reports.

Motorists are being urged to be extra alert and vehicles pulling trailers and empty lorries are particularly vulnerable, traffic information service VID said.

Three out of five lanes on the A2 between Amsterdam and Utrecht were closed for a time after a lorry and trailer blew over, causing a six-kilometre jam. There were other accidents on the N50 near Zwolle and the A67 in Noord Brabant.

In Genemuiden, a lorry driver was taken to hospital after he was blown off the roof of his lorry as he tried to fix a tarpaulin.

Winds of up to 100 kph have been recorded in north-western areas, weather bureau KNMI said.

The wind is expected to die down into the evening and will pick up again on Saturday. The KNMI has issued a code yellow weather warning for the entire country.
