Selling players helped Dutch top football clubs make a profit last season

football goal keeperThe 18 Dutch premier clubs made combined profit of €3.4m last season, but are still heavily dependent on the sale of players, the Volkskrant says on Friday.

Last season the Eredivise clubs made a combined loss of €12m.

The turnaround is largely due to Arnhem club Vitesse which sold players such as Wilfried Bony and Marco van Ginkel for €20m, cutting its losses to just €4m, the Volkskrant says.

League champion Ajax was the most profitable club, booking profit of €16.6m. FC Twente was the worst performer with a loss of €7.2m.

The Dutch football association KNVB does not include income from transfers when assessing club finances, saying the sale of players is not part of normal company operations.
