Cancer remains number 1 killer in the Netherlands

A young hand touches and holds an old wrinkled hand in hospitalCancer accounted for 30% of all deaths in the Netherlands last year, making it the country’s biggest killer, the national statistics office CBS said on Friday.

However, there was a 2.4% drop in the number of cancer deaths in 2013 compared with the previous year, the CBS said. In total 141,000 people died last year.

Heart and artery disease accounted for 38,463 deaths, unchanged from 2012. The number of people dying from dementia and strokes increased but there was a reduction in lung disease deaths, the CBS said.
