More people in the Netherlands have diabetes
The number of people suffering from diabetes in the Netherlands has shot up over the past 13 years or so, according to new figures from the national statistics office CBS.
In 2001, 2.8% of the population said they had diabetes but that rose to 4.5% last year, the CBS said. This means some 750,000 have the disease.
The increase is almost entirely due to a rise in cases of type 2 diabetes which can be managed by diet and exercise. Type 2 diabetes is associated with aging and obesity. Over 17% of the over 75s told the CBS they have type 2 diabetes.
