Dutch government made plans in 2012 to reintroduce guilders if the euro collapsed
The Dutch finance ministry in 2012 made preparations to reintroduce the guilder because the euro was in danger of collapse, television programme Argos is set to report on Tuesday evening.
The report is based on interviews with former finance minister Jan Kees de Jager and central bank chief Klaas Knot who were in charge of Dutch finances at the height of the economic crisis.
A spokesman for the ministry told the programme: ‘We took everything into account but focused on the recovery of the euro.’ He did not say explicitly that the reintroduction of the guilder was one of the options.
However, a spokesman for finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem told website nu.nl that the Netherlands had been prepared for the worst.
