Crimiclown, jihadgezin, moestuinsocialisme – what will be the 2014 word of the year?
The Van Dale dictionary group on Tuesday opened the voting to find the new Dutch word of the year.
Like every year, this year’s entries stem from current news events, including the arrival of horror clowns, events in the Middle East and attitudes to poverty.
Last year’s winning entry was selfie, with 32% of the vote. The 2014 winning word will be announced on December 16.
This year’s entries are:
Clownspiet: a cross between Zwarte Piet and a clown
Crimiclown: a clown who goes around terrifying people. The name is a pun on the children’s hospital charity Cliniclowns
Dagobertducktaks: extra tax for the super rich, named after Donald Duck’s uncle Dagobert – known as Scrooge McDuck in English
Fotobom: deliberately or accidently appearing in a stupid pose in the background of someone else’s photograph.
Jihadgezin: a family in which one or more members has gone to fight with radical Muslims in Syria.
Kalifaatganger: A radical Muslim who has gone to join the self-declared Muslim caliphate.
Moestuinsocialisme: Literally: vegetable garden socialism – from Labour minister Jetta Klijnsma who said gardening is good for old people on low incomes.
Stemfie: taking a selfie while voting – not an illegal act says the home affairs minister.
Straatintimidatie: intimidation on the street.
Wegkijkstaat: (look away state) A neo-liberal society in which everyone ignores those less fortunate than themselves
