Not everyone is happy with ‘sex sells’ adverts for Museum Night

A number of Amsterdam museums are unhappy with the poster campaign for this year’s Museum Night on November 1 because they feature naked people photographed by Playboy photographer Govert de Roos.

‘We don’t recognise ourself in the theme “sex sells, art sells”,’ a spokesman for the Anne Frank House told the Parool. ‘Nor are we an art museum. Next year it has to be done differently.’

A spokeswoman for the Nemo science museum told the paper she also had her doubts about the approach and the organisers have admitted receiving more complaints.

‘Some people think it is a shocking, crude and sexist way of generating attention,’ Caroline Vos of the N8 Museum Night foundation said. ‘But people in the target group, the 18 to 35-year-olds, think the posters are beautiful and cool.’

The aim of the campaign is to generate discussion about the way museums are being forced to become increasingly commercial, Vos said.
