There was a slight rise in the number of people arrested for football-related offences last season, according to new official figures.

In total 704 people were arrested, compared with 675 in the previous season. Police also issued 563 formal warnings and are still investigating 60 cases, including the serious crowd trouble at the KNVB Cup final between Ajax and PEC Zwolle, the register said.

Christian Democrat MPs on Tuesday said the figures show the government needs to get tougher on football hooligans. ‘The coalition is busy with words not deeds,’ said CDA parliamentarian Peter Oskam. He wants offenders to face a 10 year stadium ban.

Labour MP Tjeerd van Dekken said more needs to be done to combat racism on and off the pitch. ‘Football should be a party for everyone,’ he said.

In total, the police spent 300,000 hours policing national and international football matches.
