Free public transport boosts pensioners’ well-being
Poor pensioners who make use of their right to free public transport in Amsterdam report feeling happier and have more contact with the outside world, according to a preliminary city council report.
Public transport has been free for pensioners with an income below 110% of the minimum wage in Amsterdam since last year and 14,000 people have taken advantage of the scheme.
The aim of the trial was to reduce loneliness among pensioners and boost their self-worth. Research into the impact of the scheme shows both targets have been achieved. Pensioners report getting out more, visiting family and friends and feeling better about themselves.
The trial is due to end this December and the council has not yet take a decision about extending it, RTL news said.
