Vion announces major cost-cutting exercise

Meat processing company Vion on Thursday announced cost-cutting measures aimed at saving €100m over the next two years.

The company says it will shut a number of its factories, leading to job losses. It did not give details.

Vion has eight factories in the Netherlands and 34 in Germany, employing 6,700 people.

The expectation is that most of the closures will be in Germany where the company has a number of small and aging abattoirs and sausage factories.

Last year, Vion, one of Europe’s biggest meat processing firms, was found to have sold factory-farmed pork as organic ham.
