Holland gears up for heat wave: national ‘heat plan’ in action
The public health institute RIVM is taking special measures ahead of the expected heatwave, with temperatures expected to top 30 Celsius on Friday.
Temperatures are predicted to remain above 25 Celsius next week as well, meaning the Netherlands will be in the grip of an official heat wave.
The public health body has now implemented its ‘national heat plan‘ to make sure the elderly and vulnerable are taken care of and that people take steps to keep as cool as possible.
This means people with health problems, the elderly and the overweight are being urged to wear light clothing, remain in the shade and not to undertake physical exercise in the afternoon.
Walkers
In particular, walkers taking part in the last day of the Nijmegen four-day march (Vierdaagse) are being warned to make sure they drink enough.
The starting times have also been brought forward slightly in an effort to avoid the main heat of the day. People taking part in the 50 kilometre a day event will continue to start at 4am.
Soldiers have been told they can wear thinner uniforms and can leave their 10 kilo packs behind.
Bus company Connexxion is stationing air-conditioned buses along the final stretch of the route for well-wishers to cool down in while waiting for the walkers to cross the finishing line.
The Red Cross will also have extra staff on duty.
Heatwave
The temperature is forecast to reach as high as 32 Celsius on Saturday. It may be slightly cooler with thunderstorms on Sunday but will remain at least 25 Celsius next week. Monday is also likely to include showers.
The long term forecast is for continuing hot, sunny weather, the KNMI says.
