It’s 5-1: The Dutch hammer Spain in World Cup opener

Goals for Robin van Persie (two), Arjen Robben (two) and Stefan de Vrij gave the Netherlands a shock 5-1 victory over reigning champions Spain in their World Cup opening match in Brazil on Friday evening.

Van Persie and Robben have now set Dutch football history by both scoring goals in three successive World Cups.

‘I did not expect it to go like this,’ Dutch coach Louis van Gaal said after the match. ‘We’ve had a good start but we still need to win against Australia. Then we’ve had a very good start.’

Robin van Persie said after the game: ‘We all have to enjoy this. But it is only three points and we have to go on. This evening we can enjoy it but tomorrow we have to focus on Australia.’
