Paper train tickets set to vanish in July
Paper tickets will disappear from the Dutch railway system on July 9, junior transport minister Wilma Mansveld has told parliament.
Travellers without a public transport smart card (ov-chipkaart) – such as tourists and incidental train users – will have to buy a disposable card. Journeys by the disposable card will be €1 more expensive to cover the extra cost, Mansveld said.
Dutch railway company NS also plans to close off more platforms and stations to all but smart card users from August, news agency ANP says.
Rail users’ organisations are not happy about the phasing out of paper tickets. They say it is wrong that tourists and occasional users will have to pay more money to use the train.
