Standards in Dutch schools have fallen, although pupils are doing better in maths, according to international league tables published on Tuesday.

The Pisa tests, run by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, assess teenagers in reading, science and maths and are run every three years. More than 500,000 15-year-old pupils in 65 countries are tested.

Each year, the focus is on one subject in particular. For the latest report, this was maths.

The latest Pisa test puts the Netherlands at number 13 in the overall league, three places lower than in 2009. However, when it comes to maths, the Netherlands has moved up from 11th to 10th place, albeit with a lower score than in the previous test. 

The top three in the league has not changed since 2009: Shanghai, Singapore and Hong Kong.
