High street stores deny rejecting Bangladesh textile deal
High street chains Prénatal and Coolcat are considering whether to sign the clothing industry agreement on improving wages and working conditions for textile workers, Nos television said on Tuesday.
The two companies were criticised by aid minister Lilianne Ploumen on Monday for failing to sign the deal, drawn up in the wake of the Bangladesh fire which killed over 1,100 people. Wibra, also singled out by the minister, has not yet commented.
Coolcat chief Roland Kahn said his company is prepared to sign the agreement if he agrees with the conditions. Far more companies than the three highlighted by the minister have not yet signed up to the agreement, he said.
Prénatal said in a written statement it is currently finalising a report on the Bangladesh agreement and said it supports the minister’s call for constant improvements in working conditions.
